reading terminal market

Reading Terminal Market is basically a huge warehouse of mostly food vendors and miscellaneous dining options, right in the heart of downtown Philadelphia. Bakeries (plural!), dairy and cheese, seafood, produce, Pennsylvania Dutch stands, specialty foods, restaurants galore... The list goes on and on.

With so much to choose from, you can imagine how difficult it was deciding what to get for lunch. However, one thing was certain. We came to try Delilah's famous macaroni and cheese, which Oprah declared the best in the country. Her recipe includes Velveeta, butter, half-and-half, sharp yellow Cheddar, extra-sharp white Cheddar, mozzarella, Asiago, Gruyere, Monterey Jack, Muenster and a dozen eggs. As wild as it sounds, the flavor was actually mild. It was good, but not what we had expected, I guess. I think once you start adding that many different kinds of cheese it loses direction. Still, it was a fun experience.

To go with the macaroni and cheese... Melinda ordered Delilah's southern fried chicken (right), while Sam tried a stromboli, another popular item in Philly (left). I had a ribeye sandwich from some Amish farmers (front). Good stuff.

Sam is not impressed. Can you tell?

I forgot to mention... We see these penny machines everywhere we go, and every time we spot one, we stop and crank out some souvenirs. On this trip, they had some in Atlantic City on the boardwalk and one at the Betsy Ross House. Melinda found this machine in the market particularly exhilarating.

We wandered around looking for souvenirs.

Eldreth Pottery (salt-glazed stoneware), handmade in Lancaster County using traditional Pennsylvania German methods.

Some of us were looking for souvenirs...
Some of us were merely seeking candy.

Yeah, you know I bought one!

Amish quilts hanging overhead at the PA General Store

Philadelphia Soft Pretzels at Metropolitan Bakery

Kitchen Sink Brownies at Flying Monkey Patisserie
Oreos, animal crackers, M&Ms, pretzels and potato chips. No way. Yes way.

How cute are these, with the little gummy coke bottles on them.

...drool...

We couldn't leave the market without some of that delicious farm-fresh Lancaster County ice cream.

So smooth and creamy...
Oh, and the ice cream was good too.

OMG the food pics! You should receive some award from food magazines. I would go crazy in that Market. I am sorry that the mac & cheese was disappointing. I hate when that happens. The picture of the pretzels turns me on lol

LOL... Yes, I could see you going nuts in this place! There's just so much going on here. I wanted to hit it a few times while we were in town, but it closes at like 4pm, so we had to make the most of our one visit. Definitely a highlight of our trip!
